WordPress and Joomla are both hugely popular open source projects, drupal is enterprise level and much more complicated and involved.

Serious coders love drupal, Joomla has some amazing very active projects with some incredible talent working on select components, modules and plugins. WordPress is super easy if you’ve used Drupal or Joomla and many claim its best for seo as a stock install.

As you guys all know, I’ve special spot in my heart for wordpress. For many reasons.. Amazing support out there for wordpress from developer community, plugins , themes, easy to use and navigate but I figured it would be fun to compare WordPress vs Joomla vs Drupal. Three of the most powerful tools in web community at the moment from SEO perspective.

Drupal seems really interesting as it is robust and seem like a total powerhouse compared to WordPress and Joomla, but the thing is it seems way too complicated for the non-technie. If having a lot of extra functionality in your site like forums, members area, directories, etc etc then Joomla or Drupal would be the better option.

Joomla is an extremely flexible and highly supported powerhouse once you learn how to use it. It does have a learning curve though, but not nearly as technical as Drupal. I don’t even feel comfortable suggesting this as platform of choice to any small business owner that I talk to as admin UI in Joomla is not most user friendly.
Joomla is considered a ‘designers’ CMS, as it’s very easy to create templates for Joomla – you can find folks on here and DP that will create one-off templates in Joomla for pennies. As it shows, it is quite chosen system within developer community however most developers don’t factor in “End User Hands-on training” when they choose CMS.

WordPress is the most powerful for SEO especially out of the box with no plug-ins considered. Now when you start adding in plug-ins it becomes harder to decide. If SEO is your goal I would choose WordPress though.
All-in-one SEO plugin works really well with wordpress as well as XML sitemaps and Daily Stat. Three of most commonly used plugins by any SEO person who’s working on WordPress platform. Having used all 3 at some point, in my experience, my WordPress sites have gained the best rankings. Plus its the easiest to get your head round and there is a plugin for pretty much anything you want. Oh and development costs for custom plugins is low.

When You Assume …
What you don’t know can hurt you.
What you think you know can hurt you too.

I once heard an experienced project manager assert that a project could have infinite resources. Why did he think that? He’d taken a training course where the instructor said it was so. When it comes to project management, we should examine our assumptions periodically to decide if they are building blocks or mental blocks.

The 10 assumptions are:

1.People will know how to find your website
2.People know what you sell
3.Everything will go as planned
4.People know where to click
5.People know how to get home
6.People know where they are
7.People know how to buy
8.People will volunteer loads of personal information
9.People will contact customer service if they have a question or problem
10.People will come back
The key takeaway from the article is: never assume. In other words, you should not design your website based on assumptions. Just because you behave in a certain way, it does not imply that other people will do so, too. This is an interesting topic and I will be covering it soon in a more in-depth post. Stay tuned!

Context is king. The correct answer to pretty much every question in project management is: “It depends.” A more precise answer needs context. For example, I have heard many people assert that “no activity should require more than 40 hours of effort” without noting that this guidance is intended for activities performed by professional staff working at least half-time on a project that is reporting status weekly.

Change requests should be cause for celebration. When your customer or client asks for something new or different, it means that they are actually involved in the project. It means that they care about the project, that they are still interested in it, and that they are still planning on using the product of the project.

Variances from plan should be greeted with pleasure and joy. When there are variances, you know that there’s a good chance people are telling you the truth. Since we know that no non-trivial project ever goes exactly according to plan, variances mean that we are living in the real world rather than building castles in the sky. I was once called upon to provide expert project management testimony in a lawsuit, and I reviewed a plan that had over 600 activities that had been completed with zero variance. Yet this same project was more than 4,000 hours over budget because of “unplanned work.” A few pointed questions revealed that the bulk of the overrun was not unplanned work in the sense of omitted activities, but rather 600 rather small budget overruns.

The team should develop the plan. Many project managers disappear into their cubicle and emerge with the plan held high like Moses descending from the Mount. Not a good idea. Involving the team — and the customer, sponsor, or user when possible — in the development of the project plan will not only produce a better plan, it will also help to ensure understanding of and commitment to that plan.

Content Management Systems Comparison

Often, I get asked by my clients what’s CMS tool? Which one is a good one?

What’s difference between WordPress and Joomla or Drupal. I decided to present a little educational writeup by Written by Tim Stiffler-Dean on this. Hope you all enjoy

You can feel free to contact me on development on any of these platforms. SearchReadySeo is your one stop shop for Web Design, SEO, CMS Systems, ecommerce websites, Social Media Marketing and a lot more..

WordPress vs Joomla vs Drupal

It was only time that kept bloggers around the world from writing their comparisons of the three major Content Management Systems (WordPress, Joomla and Drupal) – and that time is finally up. People everywhere are breaking out their laptops and logging into their blogs to share what they believe are reasons for choosing this software or that…. and yet most of them seemed to have missed the important reasons why someone might choose one CMS over another.

So I’m taking it upon myself to spread some much needed understanding of the three systems and hopefully help you decide which one is best for you.

Background, History and Experience

Since a majority of people are discussing WordPress, Joomla and Drupal as the three best Content Management Systems, I’m going to stick to them. Luckily, I’ve had experience using each extensively, and know the ins and outs of actually using the systems. To put this quite simply, I will not be giving you many statistics based on research… I’m giving you information from first-hand experience.

Only within the last year has WordPress actually begun to step up as a true CMS. However the other two, Drupal and Joomla, have seemingly always been fighting for that top spot in the community. Both are open source, and both are widely developed with thousands of members in their community helping to develop and extend the possibilities of use for each. While WordPress is considered the underdog in the CMS war, it is most definitely the king of blogging software (something that Joomla and Drupal struggle to do efficiently).

However, even where each has its flaws and each has its strengths (which I will explain below) you can build any kind of website with either one. I have built blogs with Joomla and I have built shopping cart websites with WordPress. It just depends on what you need it to do, your familiarity with the system, and how long you have to work on that program. In fact, that is something that is misunderstood by many people – if you don’t like using Drupal, that doesn’t make it less valuable, it just makes it less useful to you!

But I digress, let us continue with a look at WordPress:

WordPress is just for blogging…. or is it?

WordPress is an excellent system to use when creating a website that lets you quickly get your thoughts out on the web, but while it is often used as a blog, it can be configured to work in many other interesting ways as well. One particular client of mine recently needed a website that would allow him and his employees to have an internal website for sharing notes, documenting tasks and writing about what was going on. Since WordPress is easy to use and some of them were already familiar with it, it was an obvious solution. Install WordPress on a server that they could access quickly and easily from anywhere with an internet connection, and let them get to business rather than have to learn about a whole different system.

It is key to know that WordPress is extremely easy to use and setup. I have used it several times with clients that are brand new to the internet and having a website, yet they can pick this system up and use it quicker than the other two. Since WP is already developed to work as a blog, though, it can be setup to do so without any hesitation. Comments are already built into the system, as well as pinging services, multiple blogger profiles, trackbacks and more. Most of the time nothing needs to be done to those systems either, because they already work the way that the user would want them to.

WordPress, however, is not to be used for everything. I have had little success (its there, just not much) using WordPress as a shopping cart for certain clients. The very reason that WordPress was created was to keep people from wanting to customize it to do things that are much more advanced. It is supposed to be used a certain way without modification – because any modification that you give to it may very well cause it to break. You will find many users of WP complaining that it is not developer friendly – and rightfully so, because there will be countless times in your journey to that great website that an upgrade released by the WP developers causes your entire site to simply disappear, or for those modifications that you made previously to no longer even exist.

WordPress Pros

Simple to use – No need for modifications

Excellent for blogging or sharing thoughts in a sequential manner

Even the most elderly of users can get the hang of it quickly

WordPress Cons

Not developer friendly

The community seems to like to complain

Upgrades bring more bugs than fixes sometimes

Drupal is to developers as candy is to children

If you’re the type of person who would rather hand-code the content of your pages than use a WYSIWYG Editor, or if you enjoy tweaking the code that makes up the framework of a website, then Drupal is probably for you. This advanced content management system more closely resembles a developer platform than a traditional CMS. Its not to say that only developers can use the system though, but to say that they will feel more at home here than in the other two. Interestingly, being more developer friendly does not automatically make it more user friendly – in fact the developer has to work hard to make it that way if they need the end-product to do so.

There are dozens of more tags and functions that can be used to develop in Drupal than in WordPress or even Joomla. Every single node has its own set of commands and tags that can be placed elsewhere to manipulate the function of the site, and this makes for a very intense experience (whether or not you know what you’re doing). For those that are not so developer-minded, this can be the trial of their lives, but for people who live in code – well, they can literally get lost developing some very cool websites.

Now, these websites can act and function in some pretty neat ways, but Drupal also has the problem that it just doesn’t always look that great. I have seen very few websites built in Drupal that look and feel as good as they function. You can especially see this in the theme directory on the Drupal.org website, where there are dozens of these themes built to prove the exact point I just made. It’s a shame really, because with all of the development advancements the software has, it would almost be perfect with a stronger usability and design interface.

Drupal Pros

Extremely developer friendly. If I loved code more I would almost always pick this system.

Strong community to help discern the dozens (hundreds) of functions and tags available.

Can be used to create some really awesome websites that can outperform a majority of other sites out there.

Drupal Cons

Not very designer and user-friendly. It’s hard for someone with little code knowledge to make the leaps required to do the very cool things that Drupal is becoming known for.

Theming of Drupal has been a huge case of fail (until recently). Probably because it has been developers, not designers, that are making the themes.

Getting a Drupal website published could cost you more time, and thus more money, than WordPress or Joomla.

Joomla – Let’s build websites together with Joomla!

If WordPress is more for end-users and Drupal is more for developers, then Joomla! must be more for designers, right? If that’s the conclusion that you came to then you’re on the right track, but I would venture to say that Joomla! is actually a mix of all of those things. The name Joomla, in fact, means ‘all together’ in Swahili (Urdu), and it seems they’ve been living up to their name in the way that this powerful CMS works.

Designers will choose Joomla because of the amazing capabilities that its engine has in making websites look fantastic. Newcomers to Joomla (and website management) will love the fact that it is very easy to use and even customize as more and more developers create tools that are easier to understand. Developers, likewise, will choose the system because of its large capacity for development and customization. The new MVC framework was built just so that anyone with the knowledge could override the core of the CMS without actually modifying the original code.

Still, it’s far from perfect. It’s still not as flexible as Drupal is with its code. While there are many ways to override what the default code does, there are some parts of the system that just can’t be pushed and stressed as hard as Drupal can be. Also, while Drupal can be used to run multiple websites with one backend and database, Joomla lacks the ability to create multi-sites. It is just powerful enough to be useful, but not enough to do anything.

In a side-by-side comparison with WordPress, Joomla still has some way to go with being user friendly. In each case where I’ve had people use both systems to manage a website, those that lacked good knowledge of the internet or how their website even worked always chose WordPress over Joomla. It is simple enough that it can be taught to practically anyone, but not enough that anyone would want to learn it.

Joomla Pros

Friendly for all types of users – Designers, Developers and Administrators

Huge community is awesome for assisting with creation of websites

Has been rapidly growing and improving itself for the past three years

Joomla Cons

Still not user-friendly enough for everyone to understand

Not quite as powerful as Drupal, and can be a bit confusing for some to jump into

Recently rebuilt the entire system from ground-up, and so there are still many out there sticking to the old versions (1.0.x)

In Conclusion

There is not just one system available for us to build our websites with, and so we should never limit ourselves to just one either. With so many different uses and ideas and opportunities that can be found in each, why should we anyone try so hard to make those CMS’s that they dislike seem worst than their own. I remember at an event two years ago that both a Joomla and Drupal team went to, and the members of the teams actually swapped shirts – with the Drupal team wearing Joomla shirts and vice-versa.

The Funny and Bizarre and Unusual client requests in Web Design World

There are some demands from clients that almost all web designers will have come across, even multiple times and because of this, they aren’t usually the funniest or most bizarre.

Here are list of most common one's:

1. Bigger Logo (Logo must be bigger than this since it's not visible)
Probably the most requested of all time is to make the logo bigger or more ‘prominent’. Many clients seem not to recognize branding as a whole and think that the most effective way to improve that is by increasing the size of the logo.

when was the last time you went to a website and bought something just because you liked the logo? I’d bet you actually bought the product or service because…it was what you were looking for.

In the most simplistic sense, your logo is on your website to identify your company. But your logo doesn’t sell. Your logo confirms to the user that, “Yup, this is the company I was looking for.” or “Yup, this company looks professional.” VISITORS REALLY DON’T CARE
When the logo is bigger, it draws attention. And although this might seem like a good thing, take into consideration you only have a handful of seconds to grab your visitors attention and draw them into your website based on your offering. How many of these precious seconds do you want your visitor to invest into your logo, which…doesn’t sell?

People visit your website for your content, whether it’s information marketing, explaining the services you have to offer, or products you would like them to purchase. They really don’t care about your logo. Your major calls to action should take visual priority over your logo. Each successful website has a strategy that walks a user through the website from point A to point B to get them to do something in relation to the sites overall goals. I have never developed or read a visitor strategy that starts with the logo on the site.

I have never developed or read a visitor strategy that starts with the logo on the site.

But please, for the success of our website, don’t let your logo scream for attention.

2. No Concept of Time or Money
Unfortunately some people just do not understand that building large websites take time and hard work to create and demand too much without wanting to pay appropriate prices.

3. Hatred of Whitespace
Whitespace, as we know, is a very important ingredient in web design but some clients just don’t understand this and want everything crammed up into as small a space as possible. There’s nothing worse that trying to read something but the design has cramped the text right next to other elements on the page in order to fit more detail in a small space. It leads to a frustrating experience. Good use of whitespace can give elements such as text room to breathe, reducing the strain on users’ eyes and making for a pleasurable experience.

Here is a blog that talks about how to use whitespace effectively

Rules to Live by in Google Adsense world:

How does AdSense work?
Usually the first way bloggers choose to monetize their blog is by placing contextual ads on their pages. Google Adsense is a no brainer when it comes to contextual ads. Everyone is excepted into the program, it is easy to setup and implement, and payments are always on time.

Google Adsense provides you with a number of ad formats – image or text based. Implementing AdSense is very easy. You specify your preferences and JavaScript is then generated which you copy and paste into your page source code where you would like the ad to display. You can use the same JavaScript code on any of your websites.

Each time the page is viewed, the AdSense bot queries Google. If the page isn’t listed in Google or has changed, then the bot will scan the page to determine what ads to display. The Adsense bot can be easily identified in your server logs – it’s called Mediapartners-Google/2.1

Revenue generation will be dependent on a number of factors:

- The number of pages viewed per day
- The topic of your content
- The price paid by the advertiser for each click
- The number of people who click on the ads

This doesn’t mean to say that if you only generate a few hundred page views a day, you’ll receive a pittance. In fact, light traffic sites can generate substantial revenue if their topic covers a very competitive market.

Will AdSense boost my Google rankings?
No. AdSense and general Google search engine rankings are two totally separate beasts, but effective search engine optimization will assist in getting the most relevant and higher paying ads displaying.

Adsense don’ts
While Google is a nice partner to work with, they are strict on a number of issues.

- Once you implement the code, do not click on the ads yourself. Given the amount that some advertisers are willing to pay, Google is very, very sensitive to click fraud.
- Tell anyone else using a computer from your home not to click on the AdSense ads, just to be safe.
- Do not ever, ever try to “game” the system. Google is well aware of most of the tricks people use to engage in click fraud and pursues those people vigorously
- Don’t implement AdSense code where no-one will see it.
- Don’t incentive AdSense ads by offering rewards to visitors for clicking on ads.
- Don’t beg for clicks e.g. “help support this site, click on this ad”
- Don’t place AdSense ads on an empty page.
- Any of the above can result in your AdSense account being suspended.

In Conclusion,
- Read the AdSense rules and abide by them.
- Generate extra traffic to your site by building links fairly.
- Sit tight and be patient.

Despite the fact that the topic of getting indexed (fast) has been discussed dozens, if not hundreds, of times, there still seems to be a high demand on those techniques.

These are the steps followed by many Web Developers and SEO experts. Most of my websites get indexed in less than 24 hours, the latest example being my newest site (launched yesterday) which appeared in Google's index exactly 13 hours after the launch. And yes, the domain was new as well (registered 3 days ago).

If you are unable to do these steps yourself, You can always invest in SEO/Web Master like myself. :)

Resources that you'll need
- Some writing skills or a willing partner who possesses those skills
- 3-4 hours of spare time
On to the Action

Step 1 - Produce Initial Content / Launch the Site
This one is obvious. Your website has to have some Quality content. I usually post at least 5 pages (or articles) before the launch, but less will probably work as well. It's important, however, that your content is well optimized and keyword rich already in the beginning, as it could take you weeks if not months to get your SERPs updated after getting indexed the first time.

Despite the fact that the topic of getting indexed (fast) has been discussed dozens, if not hundreds, of times, there still seems to be a high demand on those techniques.

These are the steps followed by many Web Developers and SEO experts. Most of my websites get indexed in less than 24 hours, the latest example being my newest site (launched yesterday) which appeared in Google’s index exactly 13 hours after the launch. And yes, the domain was new as well (registered 3 days ago).

If you are unable to do these steps yourself, You can always invest in SEO/Web Master like myself.

Resources that you’ll need
- Some writing skills or a willing partner who possesses those skills
- 3-4 hours of spare time
On to the Action

Step 1 – Produce Initial Content / Launch the Site
This one is obvious. Your website has to have some Quality content. I usually post at least 5 pages (or articles) before the launch, but less will probably work as well. It’s important, however, that your content is well optimized and keyword rich already in the beginning, as it could take you weeks if not months to get your SERPs updated after getting indexed the first time.

Step 2 – Sign Up to Google Webmaster Tools
We can only speculate whether verifying your site at GWMT helps you get indexed faster or not. However, the whole process takes 5 minutes tops and you’ll get a ton of valuable information out of this later on so doing this is a very good idea even if it doesn’t directly affect the indexing time.

Step 3 – Generate an XML Sitemap
This is a very important step. Make sure that you generate an XML sitemap for each and every new site you build. If you use WP then I suggest you download the XML Sitemap Generator plugin. Not only does it automatically generate your page map and update it every time you make changes on your site, it auto submits it to Google, Bing, Ask and Yahoo making their crawlers visit your site almost instantly after each change. If you decide to go with manual sitemap building then bear in mind that you need to go back to Step 2 and submit your sitemap.

Step 4 – Publish a Press Release
This step not only helps you get indexed fast, but also brings you publicity and some valuable backlinks. I personally consider Press Releases one of the most beneficial marketing tools out there.
Needless to say, in order for your press release to be successful, it has to be well-written. If you don’t have any past experience writing press releases then I strongly suggest you to go through a good bunch of samples and read about it on the Internet. Googling for “press release writing tips” returns you a whole bunch of sites with great content on how to write and optimize your releases.

IMPORTANT! Put a lot of effort into producing a TRULY GOOD AND NEWSWORTHY press release. If your PR is poorly written then not only does it not get publicity bust most of the times it doesn’t even get approved/published.

Once you have your Press Release written and ready to be sent out, it’s time to submit it. Nowadays I use mainly paid PR submission services (for better exposure and some good extras such as being able to add more than one link etc.), however, there are many great free submission sites out there. Below is the list of some of the best free PR submission sites I’ve used in the past for great results:
- Newswire Today – THE best free PR submission site if you ask me. They usually approve new PRs within an hour or two and Google News seems to adore them, publishing PRs distributed by them almost instantly.
- PRLog.com - Press Releases are published instantly (no manual approval) and Google (talking about organic results here, not Google News) seems to index their PRs very fast and rank them rather high, allowing you to get to the #1 page even before your site itself gets indexed.
- 1888PressRelease.com – Getting approved can be rather tough (there are very strict guidelines on PRs and they don’t publish in certain categories, such as gambling or adult entertainment), but if you do get approved then you can rest assured that your press release (given that the title is at all attractive) is going to get some public attention.

Some other free sites that I’ve used at one point or another are free-press-release.com, pressbox.co.uk, prurgent.com and pr-inside.com.

But whichever sites(s) you choose, it’s always important to read their guidelines carefully and follow them to the point. If you don’t, you can rest assured that your release either won’t get published or will get deleted very soon after getting published.

Step 5 – Digg, Stumble and ping all of the below:
- Your main page
- ONE of your other pages/articles ( Please don’t digg more than one articles at one – you WILL digg them but you’ll do it gradually, digging and pinging one per day)
- Your published press release

The first two points here should be pretty straightforward. As for digging and pinging your press release, make sure that you pick one that has your active link in it as some sites allow active links within press releases, others don’t. In terms of getting indexed, sending Google to a press release that doesn’t include your active link is worthless.

As you noticed, I’m telling you to only use Digg, StumbleUpon and a ping service (I personally use Pingler.com). Some claim that you should use as many social bookmarking sites as possible, but quite frankly I haven’t found it very helpful. Sure, you’ll get some additional backlinks but comparing it with the time you need to spend to go through 20-some bookmarking sites, it’s hardly worth it. I have to say though, that lately I have experimented a little with Only wire (a $2 per month service that automatically posts your sites to around 20 social bookmarking sites) but I’m yet to draw any direct conclusions whether it helps my sites much or not.

Step 6 – Query Your Domain on Whois/Info Sites
This is a neat trick I’ve been using for a while and find it VERY helpful. Basically, you visit around 20 URLs similar to http://www.alexa.com/data/details/?url=yourdomain.com and you’re done. The whole thing takes you around 5 minutes but is incredibly beneficial.

Step 7 – (Optional, for even better results) – Craigslist Postings
What I’m telling you to do here is write ANY post on ANY Craigslist category and make sure that it includes an active link to your site. That’s it.
Craigslist gets crawled a lot and even though all links are nofollow, Google still follows them and indexes the sites it finds. I have to add, though, that your post has to carry at least SOME true value and it’s best if it’s related to your site. I also advise you to post on less popular categories, such as arts etc., to avoid your post getting flagged and eventually removed.

Step 8 - Sit back, relax and DON’T hit the “refresh” button once every 10 minutes – 1 to 24 hours
That’s it. If you followed those steps, I’m fairly confident that you can go to bed and by the time you wake up in the morning, your site will be indexed. Make sure, though, that you won’t start refreshing Google every 2 seconds to see if it’s already indexed or not. This is completely neutral in terms of getting indexed but very bad for your mental health. What I always tend to do after launching a site is set up as-it-happens Google Alerts (google.com/alerts) with my site’s address and the main keywords. This way I get an instant email notification as soon as anything happens on Google regarding my site.
